"Holy Week" in the Philippines

Since this is our first Easter in the Philippines we are at a disadvantage and relying on other's shared experiences to determine what it will be like. What we have experienced so far is that traffic is crazier than usual. But since it is only Monday it seems like people are preparing for the holiday and not acknowledging the holiday. Others have told us to be prepared for everything to shut down on Thursday morning and will not resume normality until Saturday at noon and then completely normal by Sunday. This seems counterintuitive to me since, traditionally in heavily Christian and Catholic areas of the world, Friday through Sunday is generally acknowledged as the most sacred period.

No matter. As I have considered the implications of what is celebrated during this most sacred time of the year, the following thoughts come to mind:

  • If you profess to be Christian (without denominational considerations) what transpired nearly 2000 years ago is as significant now as it was when it happened.

  • It is worth considering that, although eye witnesses to what took place are no longer available to us, we are blessed by it whether we acknowledge or not.

  • All will be resurrected (John 5:28-29)

  • Jesus Christ suffered for each of us (personally) that we could be forgiven of our indiscretions. (Moroni 6:8)

  • That through this atonement we can live to be happy eternally. (John 3:15)

This message seems a little preachy to me...please forgive me. Perhaps it would be a good use of time to take a few moments to reflect on what has transpired. Your commitment to what has transpired. What it means to you and those loved ones around you. Even just 15 minutes of study, deep contemplation and prayer. I can promise you that if you will do this, acknowledging his hand in all things, the Lord will bless you with confidence and reassurance that these things actually transpired and have meaning today.

This did not seem preachy, just firm, like the tone of a good dad.
